Chinese Herbal Medicine can be an excellent preparation for IVF, as well as a support throughout the whole process – as Jill Glover explains

Going through IVF treatment can be extremely demanding, both physically and emotionally. Chinese herbal medicine can provide tremendously helpful support before, during and after your IVF.

The time before your IVF is an excellent preparation time for both partners.

For men

This is an opportunity for men to improve the quality of their sperm with Chinese herbs. Male fertility is decreasing worldwide at an alarming rate. It can be responsible for failed IVF or ICSI cycles, and miscarriage.

Chinese herbs improve sperm count, motility, and most importantly increase the number of normal sperm. Men often find their vitality and libido improves, and they are less stressed. I often use herbs including Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra fruit), Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta Seed) and Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria seeds). These prescriptions are individually created for you.

For women

For women’s preparation, Chinese herbs are used to create a smooth menstrual cycle and a well-nourished endometrium (lining of your womb).

I use herbs like Dang Gui (Angelica), Bai Shao (White Peony) and Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia) to nourish your Blood and increase the thickness of your endometrium. I add herbs to improve circulation to your ovaries and uterus, creating a warm, vital womb lining to assist implantation. Calming or energising herbs can be added as needed to create your own bespoke herbal prescription.

During IVF

During IVF I offer an Endometrial Receptivity formula. It is taken during the stimulation phase, and between egg collection and your pregnancy test. These herbs continue to support the thickness and circulation of your endometrium. This improves the vitality of your uterus and implantation.

If you then have a positive pregnancy test, I recommend my Pregnancy Support formula. It is based on the ancient formula Shou Tai Wan, designed to support pregnancy and prevent miscarriage. It’s also a wonderful energy tonic, which is so welcome in those early weeks of pregnancy

All herbs prescribed are safe to take during pregnancy.
